The Great Purge, and the ensuing Great Terror (Большой террор) were political repressions used by the Stalinist regime to consolidate the position and power of the party and its leader.
Although the Communist Party of the Soviet Union used numerous measures of political repression to consolidate the position of the party and its leader, its oppressive and violent approach violated the basic rights of its citizens, essentially creating an environment of paranoia and fear.
